Box Hill Hospital, VIC

The Box Hill Hospital Redevelopment consisted of a new acute services tower, emergency and new main entry with a generous lobby and central atrium that linked to the existing hospital functions on the site. This forms the heart of the hospital that links the old and the new Hospital buildings. The atrium is a key wayfinding element in directing and orientating visitors within the Hospital.

Stage 1, the tower block, transformed the hospital, which is the major referral centre for Melbourne’s East, meeting the growing demand for services in this region.

Bold exterior colour is used to great effect. A strong green to the façade surrounding the inner courtyard contrasts dramatically to fractured grey tones on the outer façade of the Hospital. The green colour references the original homestead and gardens on the Hospital site donated to provide for the original Hospital in the 1950s. Green is also the official colour adopted by Box Hill Council.

A connection to nature is promoted through the provision of a variety of courtyards suited to different needs and users who benefit greatly from the ability to ‘escape’ outdoors.  The emphasis on green spaces at the Hospital resulted in a leaf design for the Hospital logo, which was then incorporated into Hospital signage, decorative timber panels, sculpture and other artworks.

The expanded hospital includes a new, larger emergency department with 19 extra cubicles and collocated medical imaging, a new 18 bed intensive care unit, 200 inpatient beds, seven new operating theatres, three endoscopy/minor procedure refurbished theatres as well as a dedicated precinct for women’s health services. Other new facilities include inpatient and day cancer treatment and cardiac catheter laboratories. Stage 2 included the refurbishment of the existing hospital facilities with sub-acute beds, clinical and non-clinical support services and expansion of outpatient services.

This project was designed by STH in a joint venture with Jackson Architecture.
