Canberra Hospital Emergency Department, ACT

STH delivered the $23 million expansion of Canberra Hospital’s Emergency Department, part of the ACT’s $909 million Health Infrastructure Program.

The Canberra Hospital Emergency Department has received an extra 1000 square metres of floor space, and a 30% increase in patient treatment spaces, taking the total number of treatment spaces in emergency from 54 to 75.

Completed over two stages, stage one of the facility was completed in January 2016 and includes 21 extra beds (a 40% increase), resuscitation bays, 12 bed emergency management unit and a 6 bed mental health assessment unit (MAU).

Stage two was completed in May 2016 and features the ACT’s first dedicated paediatric treatment facility, offering 6 patient beds, 2 consultation rooms and a private sub-waiting area separate to the main ED waiting area.

“After years of (us) fighting against poor decisions and planning, STH managed to create a design that actually, for the first time, did what we needed it to do..... their design work essentially saved and future-proofed our ED and we are eternally grateful.”
