St. Andrews War Memorial Hospital, Brisbane, QLD

Silver Thomas Hanley in association with PDT Architects Queensland undertook a major redevelopment of the existing St Andrew’s Hospital, part of Uniting Healthcare group. The challenges were in upgrading the facility whilst the hospital continued to operate, developing the master plan proposal of integrating existing and new levels and developing the difficult sloping site to the maximum, while projecting a suitable image.

The redevelopment included new and refurbished departments, including inpatient units, intensive care unit, associated clinical support areas such as operating suit, CSD, rehabilitation unit, Cardiac Catheter Labs, as well as back of house services such as kitchen and cafeteria.

The project involved early works contracts instigated to demolish existing 5-level structure, considered inappropriate for redevelopment and the construction of the new 10-level inpatient/clinical services building. The interior design ensured an overall lightness and freshness to the interior spaces, with combinations of various materials including natural stone and rich golden timber.
