Welcome to Studio STH

[Author]

For nearly five decades, our firm has been at the forefront of Australian architecture, shaping environments that enhance health, well-being, and community. In 1978, Aija and Peter Thomas were founding members of Pearce Thomas Consultants in Melbourne. They expanded their presence by collaborating with a Perth-based firm and the two practices merged in 1985 to become Silver Thomas Hanley. The businesses eventually de-merged leaving two firms with similar identities and overlapping histories.

During our history we have successfully delivered thousands of projects both nationally and internationally, playing a pivotal role in some of the world’s most significant healthcare developments.  While our foundation remains strong, we recognise that our industry, our practice, and the needs of our clients are constantly evolving.

What began as a discussion around a simple website refresh quickly grew into a broader reflection on our identity, our legacy, and, most importantly, our future. This process led to a clear realisation: our direction, our name, and the way we describe ourselves needed to evolve alongside us.

Our transition to Studio STH marks an exciting new chapter: one that aligns with our renewed strategic vision and leadership. This evolution is more than a name change. It represents our ongoing commitment to design excellence, studio culture, and sector growth.

The name Studio STH reinforces our belief that collaboration, creativity, and innovation sit at the heart of what we do. It reflects our studio-first mindset, where knowledge is shared, ideas are tested, and our team works seamlessly across geographic location and disciplines to push the boundaries of design.

The world of architecture is changing, and so are we. Our new identity reflects a more agile, responsive, and contemporary approach to design and project delivery. We embrace cutting-edge digital workflows, new methodologies, and flexible ways of working that empower our team and enhance collaboration with our clients and project partners. Studio STH is a reflection of this modern, design-led thinking, ensuring we continue to deliver innovative, functional, and future-proof solutions.

While healthcare remains at the core of our expertise, Studio STH represents a broader vision, one that extends beyond hospitals and health precincts into new and emerging sectors where we can bring our experience and deliver a fresh perspective. We are leveraging our deep experience in health and well-being to expand into education, research and science, industrial and workplace environments, specialist residential, and seniors living. These sectors align with our core principles: designing spaces that serve people, support communities, and improve lives.

As our practice has grown, so too has our reach. Studio STH reflects our expanded presence across Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and our most recently established studio in Brisbane. With teams that continue to work across Australia and internationally, this regional growth allows us to serve our clients, stay attuned to local and global trends, and bring fresh perspectives to our projects.

As we transition into this next phase, we remain committed to the principles that have defined us for nearly 50 years: collaborative, intelligent, and purposeful design that enhances the built environment. Studio STH is not just a name, it represents our belief in the power of design to shape the future.

As Studio STH, we look forward to continuing this journey with our clients, collaborators, and communities, creating spaces that don’t just work for today but are built for the future.
