St John of God Richmond Hospital

Richmond, New South Wales

A New Benchmark

The St John of God Richmond Hospital redevelopment sets a new benchmark in mental health care by creating a healing environment that prioritises patient well-being, dignity, and community connection. Located northwest of Sydney, the project transforms the historic site, integrating the heritage-listed Belmont House into a modern, village-like layout. Four residential pavilions offer patients private rooms with views of the Blue Mountains or Belmont House, fostering a sense of calm and connection to nature.

The redevelopment redefines the existing site with four distinct residential pavilions that give patients rooms with views out towards the dense canopies of the Blue Mountains or towards Belmont House. Embracing a village feel with several pavilions grouped around terraces and outdoor courtyards allow Belmont House to become the centre piece of the facility once again.

Residents have the opportunity to gather in shared spaces, such as the dining areas, café, and alfresco spaces, fostering social connections and reducing feelings of isolation often experienced by patients. The wellness centre offers an indoor swimming pool, gym, and yoga suite, encouraging residents to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing.

The project’s innovative approach departs from traditional clinical aesthetics, embracing biophilic design principles and natural materials to create a soothing, non-institutional atmosphere. By blending modern amenities with the historic charm of Belmont House, the redevelopment respects the site’s heritage while delivering holistic care.
