Austin Health Community Rehabilitation Centre, Heidelberg, VIC

The Health and Rehabilitation Centre (H&RC) at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital for Austin Health provides an integrated model that encompasses assessment, rehabilitation intervention and education services. It includes provision of a hydrotherapy pool and 2 gymnasiums, which are purpose built for community, inpatient and veterans use.

The building is a first stage of a full redevelopment of the site and will sit adjacent to a Veterans Centre for Trauma Related Health.

The design was generated through the provision of zones of access, therapy spaces, consulting, pool and gyms and secure staff respite/retreat area. The building form is dynamic and exciting. The focus on natural light and structure is evident in its shape. The shape allows clearstory south light to penetrate the internal corridor and filter into the gyms through high level glazing. Skylights are introduced into the middle core of the building, with a large skylight over the main entrance.
