Bankstown - Lidcombe Hospital Emergency Department Redevelopment, Bankstown ,NSW

Silver Thomas Hanley was commissioned to undertake the redevelopment of a new emergency department for this major hospital facility in Sydney’s South West. The Bankstown-Lidcombe Emergency Department underwent an expansion of current treatment spaces to meet capacity projections to 2026 and beyond, that were identified in the Model of Service Delivery Plan. As part of the new development, a dedicated paediatrics department and mental health / drug & alcohol / social work area has been included.

New Models of Care have been implemented with a focus on more efficient ambulant and non-ambulant streaming through the Emergency Department and into other departments such as Ambulatory Care, Medical Assessment Unit, Emergency Department Short Stay Unit, Birthing Unit and the Inpatient Unit. Staging during construction was an important consideration for this project, being a predominantly 24hr zone. The new build component encompassed the acute zones, which were identified as a priority in order to minimise interruptions during the construction period. The new build has was completed in September 2020 with refurbishment works completed in early 2021.

The completed new build component has allowed for decanting of the Emergency Department critical 24hr Red Zone within one move. The new project has addressed many of the existing ED’s issues. The remainder of staging will occur within the refurbishment area which includes a new fast-track, Orange and Green zone, separate Paediatrics Unit and Short Stay with access to natural light.

The Bankstown-Lidcombe Emergency Department project was delivered in partnership with Health Infrastructure and South Western Sydney Local Health District.
