Canterbury Road Community Care Unit, Camberwell, VIC

As part of Eastern Mental Health, this Community Care Unit is unique in its model of care. The facility cares for people with mental health issues and assists them in independent living. The residents reside in a heritage Victorian house that has been expanded to a 20 bed unit.

The design was to integrate the extension with the existing facility, and to provide varying levels of accommodation ranging from single rooms to 2 bedroom units. This unit is specifically for patients who stay up to 9 months and who are learning to be independent. Bedrooms and “hotel” units were provided for transition of patients before leaving the facility. The result is an inviting contemporary residence that has delighted the residents, families and staff.
