Box Hill Hospital - Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Box Hill, VIC

As part of Eastern Mental Health Service’s $37M redevelopment program, the Eastern Health Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) 12 bed unit, located on the Box Hill Hospital Site in Victoria was designed to cater for children and young people up to the age of 18 years, who are displaying symptoms of psychiatric disorder or severe emotional and behavioural disturbance, in a secure suburban setting.

The CAMHS unit is designed as a calming yet robust environment and supports families who live in the central and outer eastern region of Melbourne. Curved roofs, cream block work and large expanses of glazing were used to provide a positive, reassuring and welcoming place for its residents, with colours sympathetic to the local streetscape. Two blade walls of glazed bricks define the activity space that opens up onto the main courtyard. Staff observation and patient privacy are balanced with the use of open interiors and minimal corridors.

ESD principles included the use of displacement ventilation in bedrooms, a first for mental health units in Victoria.
