EARLY IN LIFE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE - MONASH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, VIC

The Monash Children’s Hospital Mental Health Service includes these key features:  20 Early  in  life  Mental  Health  Service (ELMHS) beds for adolescents, 8 neurodevelopmental psychiatry beds for younger children, assessment rooms, staff support spaces,  a multi-sensory room, multi-purpose rooms, weights room and seclusion suite.

These secure units are surrounded by landscaped courtyards and indoor and outdoor communal activity areas with BBQ facilities.  The Monash family friendly design focus is maintained with comfortably appointed family sized inpatient bedrooms and separate overnight rooms for parents.

Both units adopt a playful use of colour and wall graphics teamed with warm neutral tones and timber look finishes, to assist with creating a calming contemporary environment.   The ELMHS unit has an open plan lounge, dining and chef-managed kitchen surrounded by custom made seating.

The ELMHS is embedded in the new 230 bed Monash Childrens Hospital, a purpose built paediatric facility designed by STH. The overall design philosophy was to provide a nurturing environment with a central atrium and triangular wings that radiate from it. A simple white concrete palette is expressed externally with primary colour used as visual cues externally and internally.
