Mercy Hospital for Women, Heidelberg, VIC

Mercy Hospital for Women has become one of the most innovative, technologically advanced and efficient tertiary referral women’s hospitals in Australia. It is dedicated to providing specialist women’s health services, with obstetric/maternity services, gynaecological and surgical services, and clinical support services. The facility has 75 postnatal, 25 gynaecological, 12 birthing suites and a 62 cot Neonatal nursery.

The hospital allows for the largest capacity of births (6000 a year) in any one facility in Victoria. Planning of the facility centres on the collocation of related departments to provide an integrated service, continuity of care, a familiar environment and consistency of staff. A major innovation is the Neonatal Intensive Care Cots, which are partitioned in a pinwheel open plan arrangement that provides more space for parents to attend the bedside of their infants while improving privacy and enhancing staff observation.

The Interior Design reflects the mission of the Sisters of Mercy for the MHW, of a welcoming environment that promotes the wellness of women. The project was designed in association with Daryl Jackson Architects.

“Mercy is a beautiful building. It is highly functional in terms of clinical requirements but also in terms of aesthetics. For our patients and visitors the long vista out to the Dandenong Ranges contributes to making the setting of care more like a hotel than a hospital.” Mr John Ballard, Chief Executive Officer, Mercy Health & Aged Care
