Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, India

Safdarjung Hospital is located in South Delhi opposite the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The hospital campus is spread over approximately 40 acres with extensive campus infrastructure.

The new hospital is planned as six functional entities, to be built over three stages. Facilities will include over 3,000 beds, 64 operating theatres, 250 outpatient rooms, auditorium, medical college, food court, shopping facilities and three levels of basement car parking. The main entry will feature a three-storey glass foyer, acting as a landmark and containing the main reception. The ground, first and second floors will be interconnected, forming a podium for the inpatient towers.

The use of multiple courtyards and gardens helps introduce natural light throughout the facility and also helps to explain functionality.

External materials will be primarily stone, prefinished metal panels and glass. Sunscreens on the NE and SE corners will feature an abstracted banyan tree root pattern, the national tree of India. Interior design elements will use regional materials, geometric patterns and stone.
