Sunshine Hospital Radiation Therapy Centre, St Albans, VIC

The Sunshine Radiotherapy Services Building is part of the stage 2 Sunshine Hospital redevelopment for Western Health. The design brief called for a standalone, greenfield radiotherapy centre, located within the existing Sunshine Hospital site that provides state-of-the-art Radiotherapy treatment and associated services to cancer patients in the western suburbs of Melbourne. The centre is operated by the strategic partner of the hospital: The Peter Mac Cancer Centre.

The building comprises 4 bunkers of which 2 are fitted out for operation and the other 2 to receive linac machines in the future, when expansion occurs. Also included in the facility are 2 CT rooms, 1 orthovoltage treatment room, consulting suites and a patient holding area.

The layout of the building has been strategically designed so that the future stages of the redevelopment could be carried out to avoid major disruption to existing operation. The centre is specific in its therapy. Patients have been diagnosed with cancer and are seeking treatment here. Many are traumatized and feeling anxious.

STH used the vision of a Rainbow as a metaphor to celebrate hope and life. The rainbow spectrums of colours are showcased in a banding effect on the main curved wall of the building, providing a signifier on approach, a “beacon” of light and hope.
