University Hospital Geelong, Geelong, VIC
The University Hospital Geelong is a major tertiary facility in regional Victoria. STH has been associated with the campus for over 10 years, developing a number of projects for Barwon Health during that time. In 2009, STH was appointed to undertake a Master Plan review which gave rise to a series of campus expansion projects valued in excess of $127M.
The first objective was to create space on the congested site to deliver the major service expansions required. This was done through a number of enabling projects that were implemented to facilitate the main development project. These works included expansion of the Mental Health services, 2 new OR’s and a new Out-patient facility on Bellerine Street. Additional projects included the relocation of the HR, Administration and Accounting teams.
The new works included a new 24 bed ICU facility, comprised of 2 x 12 bed pods with 100% single rooms for patients and dedicated amenities for visitors and relatives; a major expansion of the IPU with 96 additional beds comprising a 32 bed medical / surgical IPU, 32 bed Oncology IPU, 24 bed Palliative Care IPU and 8 bed GEM IPU and a 16 bed Medical Assessment Unit.
The redevelopment also included a new Supportive Care Centre (SCC) co-located with the Andrew Love Cancer Centre (ALCC), previously completed by STH in 2006. The SCC involved the expansion of the ALCC outpatient functions and the development of a dedicated support facility, intended to provide ALCC consumers and cancer support groups with a resource and drop-in centre.
STH planned and designed this major expansion project for Barwon Health with future proofing considered and includes expansion paths for the anticipated growth in Emergency Services and built in capacity for a further expansion of the IPU accommodation.
