Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment

Canterbury, New South Wales

In 2023 Government announced its intention to redevelop the Canterbury Hospital with a Stage 1 project budget of $350m. Canterbury Hospital is within the Sydney Local Health District, (SLHD).

The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment is proposed in response to the significant projected population growth and ageing in the Campsie area, the urgent need to upgrade the hospital infrastructure in order to facilitate safe, contemporary integrated models of care and adequate facilities to meet demand.

Key design principles informed the Endorsed Key Themes which underpinned the project, namely:

  • Connection to Country
  • Connection to place
  • Wellbeing
  • Functionality & Legibility
  • Flexibility & Adaptability
The Project will enhance the Hospital capacity and will deliver the following departments located within a new facility:

  • Two 24 bed inpatient unit
  • One 24 bed inpatient unit cold shell level
  • 18 bed Intensive Care unit
  • Pharmacy department
  • Education and Training Facility
  • End of Trip Facility
  • Aboriginal Liaison Officer amenities
  • BOH expansion and refurbishments

And expansion and refurbishment of the following services within the existing hospital:

  • Expansion and refurbishments of the existing Emergency Department
  • Expansion and refurbishments of the existing Theatres
  • Antenatal expansion within the existing facility
  • Expansion and refurbishments to Pathology Unit
  • Ambulatory Care expansion within the existing facility

Further works include updated landscaping, two levels of car parking, and new bridge links to the existing facility.
