Kirribilli Apartment

Kirribilli, New South Wales

Compact Style

At only 28m2, the studio home is precisely conceived to maximise its useable footprint without compromising on the creature comforts of a larger traditional home.
We have created a home for our clients that feels bright, comfortable, and organised.  Restricted by its compact footprint, we have, in great detail, dedicated locations for everything to eliminate the need for unnecessary clutter intruding into the overall living space.

Some of these considerations include concealment of the vacuum cleaner, iron and board; bringing laundry amenities into the apartment to form part of the kitchen (otherwise shared external to dwelling), enhanced wardrobe / storage capacity without making the apartment feel dwarfed by full height joinery; integrating shelving to upholstered bedhead to act as bedside tables; finally, the design understands the importance for personalisation within a home, allowing moments where the client can insert their personal touches throughout.

Light and textured finishes are used throughout. This is complemented by a warm timber tone to showcase some key functional aspects of this smaller home. The lightness of materiality also acts to encourage natural light to playfully reflect in and around, creating an additional sensory dimension to the space.

With its stunning location and sweeping water views, the client wanted to capitalised on these assets. Large mirrored splashbacks to the kitchen and bathroom vanity allow views to be observed from all angles. This arrangement also allows natural light from the balcony windows gently diffuse into these areas.

Adjacent to the kitchen, the bathroom is concealed behind a seamless vertical timber wall, a deliberate attempt to provide strong separation between the two functions which are located within close proximity. Rounding the corner, to the sleeping area, the bathroom is revealed by a large glazed visual panel, allowing sights out to the harbour when inside.
Inside the newly extended bathroom, the vanity has been transformed into a feature, with handmade tiles to inject colourways that mimic the movement of the blue water, complementing the studio’s locality.
