Casey Hospital Expansion Project

Berwick, Victoria

The Casey Hospital Expansion enhances healthcare capacity in Melbourne’s southeast, addressing increasing demand through a patient-centered design. Delivered as one of Australia’s first successful hospital public-private partnership (PPP) expansions, the project provides 128 new inpatient beds, 12 ICU beds, and expanded surgical facilities, ensuring greater access to critical and elective care.

The integration of Monash University’s education spaces fosters collaboration between medical professionals and students, supporting the next generation of healthcare workers. The hospital’s new entry, marked by a striking copper-coloured aluminium canopy, enhances wayfinding while creating a welcoming presence within the community.

Designed for efficiency, the project strategically placed core clinical services to maintain uninterrupted hospital operations during construction. An internal courtyard improves navigation and access, while sustainable initiatives, such as an innovative exhaust system in food preparation areas, reduce energy consumption and improve working conditions.

The expansion was completed in early 2020, increasing ICU capacity in time to support Victoria’s COVID-19 response. Through thoughtful planning and stakeholder collaboration, the hospital now offers an adaptable and future-ready healthcare environment, balancing innovation with patient and staff well-being.
