Bendigo Hospital

Bendigo, Victoria

An Enhanced Wellness Landscape

The Bendigo Hospital redevelopment delivers a world-class healthcare facility designed to enhance patient care, community engagement, and environmental integration. As Victoria’s largest regional hospital, the project prioritises a holistic approach to healthcare, emphasising the connection between well-being and the built environment.

Studio STH played a critical role in clinical planning, interiors, and documentation, ensuring that the 372-bed hospital, Integrated Cancer Centre, and Psychiatric Services Precinct met evolving healthcare needs. The hospital’s 48 courtyards, green roofs, and indigenous gardens create a healing environment, reinforcing the therapeutic impact of nature.

Overcoming site constraints, the design optimises available space by incorporating a central ‘hospital street,’ improving connectivity and efficiency. Extensive stakeholder engagement ensured the hospital reflects the cultural and social fabric of the region, incorporating Indigenous and mental health services.

The flexible ward design accommodates changing care requirements, while intuitive wayfinding and integrated wellness spaces enhance accessibility.
As a Public-Private Partnership, the project balances innovation with long-term operational sustainability, setting a benchmark for regional healthcare infrastructure.

“The principles of the design are that it’s a calm, homelike as much as you can make a hospital homelike, environment… We believe that if you get the architecture right, you improve people’s mental state.”
