Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA)

East Melbourne, Victoria

International Research

The Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) is an internationally recognised leader in ophthalmology, dedicated to advancing clinical research and innovative treatments for eye diseases.

To support its growing research capabilities, CERA identified the need for a purpose-built Eye Clinical Research Centre (ECRC) that enhances clinical trials and facilitates cutting-edge laboratory research. This expansion enables CERA to improve patient outcomes by streamlining research operations, accelerating clinical breakthroughs, and strengthening collaboration across disciplines.

Studio STH was commissioned to develop key strategic studies to guide the project's planning and design. These included an Operating Model to optimise research and clinical workflows, a Functional Design Brief outlining design principles and spatial requirements, and an Accommodation Options Analysis assessing site retention versus offsite alternatives. These studies ensured that the new facility would not only meet CERA’s immediate needs but also provide long-term flexibility for future advancements in ophthalmic research.

The $24 million redevelopment co-locates services across two sites— the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) and a newly built commercial building in East Melbourne. Spanning 3,640m², the facility integrates research and clinical functions, featuring advanced laboratories, imaging suites, flexible workspaces, and patient-focused clinical trial areas.

Key features such as vision lanes, angiogram and dark rooms, and multipurpose testing facilities enable precise diagnostics and pioneering treatments. This expansion cements CERA’s role as a global leader in ophthalmic research while enhancing its capacity to translate discoveries into real-world patient care.
