Port Macquarie Hospital - Mental Health Expansion

Port Macquarie, New South Wales

Connected with Nature

The Mental Health Expansion at Port Macquarie Base Hospital delivers a purpose-built, 24-bed Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit designed to meet the evolving needs of the Mid North Coast community. Aligned with the Mental Health Services Clinical Services Plan, this expansion provides a safe and therapeutic environment for patients experiencing acute psychiatric conditions and behavioral disorders.

A core focus of the design was creating a calming, non-clinical environment that promotes healing and recovery. The unit maximises natural light, integrates native bushland views, and features a central courtyard that offers patients a tranquil outdoor space. The layout supports a flexible care model, allowing different patient cohorts to be either separated or engaged in shared activities, reinforcing a sense of community while respecting individual needs.

The co-design approach played a pivotal role in shaping the facility. Studio STH worked closely with Aboriginal groups, consumers, carers, and healthcare staff to refine key elements, such as bay windows with integrated daybeds in youth bedrooms for longer and more comfortable family visits, enhanced ensuite storage, and a dedicated visitor lounge for private interactions. These thoughtful design choices have significantly improved both patient and staff experiences.

Since opening, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with staff reporting that the environment enables them to deliver new models of care more effectively. The facility stands as a benchmark for future mental health infrastructure, demonstrating how thoughtful design can foster dignity, comfort, and connection.

“You can be proud that your design and input has made an actual positive difference to people’s lives today and long into the future.”

Dean Bilton BN MN, Nursing Unit Manager, Mental Health
