Repat Health Precinct
Adelaide, South Australia
Transformational Design
The transformation of the former Repatriation General Hospital into the Repat Health Precinct reflects a commitment to revitalising essential healthcare services while preserving the site’s historical significance. The redevelopment enhances patient recovery, community integration, and specialised care through carefully planned infrastructure upgrades and new facilities.
Key outcomes include a 26-bed Care Transition Facility supporting patients with dementia and those transitioning to home or aged care, as well as dedicated brain injury and spinal cord rehabilitation wards. A Veterans’ Wellbeing Centre, wheelchair sports and rehabilitation gymnasiums, and a vibrant town square foster a holistic healing environment.

Preserving community heritage was integral to the design, with the refurbishment of key veterans’ facilities such as the Repat Chapel, Remembrance Gardens, and SPF Hall, ensuring their continued use for future generations. Additionally, specialist dementia care facilities developed by public and private operators integrate seamlessly with the broader precinct, benefiting from shared community and support services.
With a 70-year history, the site posed challenges related to aging infrastructure. STH’s design solutions modernised essential services while maintaining uninterrupted hospital operations, particularly for radiology and inpatient care. Strategic staging of building works ensured a smooth transition, allowing the precinct to meet evolving healthcare demands while honouring its legacy.
The Repat Health Precinct now stands as a model of integrated care, blending heritage, innovation, and adaptability to create a dynamic healthcare environment that supports recovery, community engagement, and long-term wellbeing.
