Multigenerational Living: Thriving Through Generations

[Authors]

When designing this multigenerational residential development concept, Studio STH set out to re-imagine what multigenerational living could be and to create an inclusive space that fosters wellbeing across all generations. At the heart of this vision is the connection between mind, body, and heart—three core principles guiding the design:

  1. The Mind: spaces for teaching, learning and extending the longevity of a healthy mind
  2. The Body: spaces for physical activity, maintaining and enhancing people’s bodily capabilities
  3. The Heart: Creating a hearth/heart/spirit by giving everyone space for community building

A Public Realm that Welcomes All

A commitment to inclusivity defines the integrated public realm and gardens, ensuring they cater to residents, visitors, staff, and the wider community. The landscape design fosters a welcoming atmosphere, inviting engagement across generations and abilities.

At the ground level, inclusivity is reinforced through a seamless connection between public and private spaces. Accessible pathways, interactive dry creeks, and seating nooks create an environment where people of all ages and abilities can move freely, interact, and find moments of respite. By opening sightlines and creating both physical and visual transparency, the design encourages participation while maintaining quiet, secluded spaces for reflection. This welcoming “front door” environment strengthens the sense of community and social cohesion.

Intergenerational Play and Interaction

Moving up to Level 1, the design introduces a series of open, programmable spaces that encourage interaction between different generations. Aged care residents and children from the on-site day-care can come together in shared environments, fostering meaningful connections through play, storytelling, and shared learning experiences.

Key features include:
  • Sensory gardens with raised planters of varying heights, ensuring accessibility for all users.
  • Undulating pathways that offer opportunities for both play and rehabilitation.
  • Quiet zones for respite and reflection.
  • Flexible gathering spaces that can host events, exhibitions, and temporary entertainment, adapting to the evolving needs of the community.

On Level 2 and above, a series of thoughtfully designed gardens provide residents and their families with opportunities for relaxation, contemplation, and connection to nature. These elevated green spaces vary in size, function, and outlook, allowing individuals to choose environments that best match their physical and emotional needs.

Planting across all levels ensures a continuous connection with nature—both physically and visually—reinforcing a biophilic approach that enhances wellbeing. Material selections bring the outside in, using warm, natural palettes that create a calming atmosphere while also aiding wayfinding throughout the site. A balanced mix of designated gathering spaces and playful infrastructure further strengthens the site’s intergenerational appeal.
A Vision for the Future

By seamlessly integrating public and private spaces, prioritising accessibility, and fostering intergenerational connections, this development sets a new standard for multigenerational living. Through mindful design, it promotes active lifestyles, mental stimulation, and meaningful social engagement, ensuring a thriving community where all generations can grow, interact, and flourish together.
