Royal Adelaide Hospital

Patient Focused
Studio STH in association with Design Inc as part of the SA Health Partnership consortium delivered the new world-class, patient focused Royal Adelaide Hospital as a PPP in Adelaide, South Australia. The new hospital has been designed to cater for 800 beds including 100 place same-day units, with the capacity to admit more than 80,000 patients per year. In addition, there are 40 Technical Suites, a 60-bed Intensive Care Unit, alongside other associated clinical support areas such as Day Oncology and Renal Dialysis units, trauma Emergency Department, diagnostic areas and a Hyperbaric unit. Other support areas include a food court, retail precinct, staff amenities, innovative office space and green spaces.
It is South Australia’s greenest hospital with numerous environmentally sustainable design initiatives incorporated into the design. New technologies, innovative facilities and state of the art equipment will provide the highest quality treatment and care for patients.

The hospital is designed around “a journey to health”, providing for short journeys between surgery treatment and recovery areas, and for clinical care to be brought to the patient in their own single bedrooms (100%). Each bedroom is designed to create a healing environment with an emphasis on privacy, passive surveillance, the opportunity to display artwork, and a place for visiting family to stay.

Sustainably Led
The RAH has been awarded a 4 Star Green Star – Healthcare Design v1 rating, making it the largest and most technically complex Green Star project in Australia at the time of completion. The rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) formally recognises the hospital for its commitment to environmentally sustainable design and building practices.
Captured and recycled water is used for toilet flushing, irrigation etc to offset the water used for drinking, cooking and personal bathing. In addition, high efficiency water fittings have been incorporated throughout the facility.
The RAH has been designed to optimise daylight, reducing the demand for artificial light. Extensive energy metering and reporting strategies are in place to identify and manage energy consumption. Onsite generation systems utilise waste heat to provide heating to the building.

Indoor Environment Quality
Within the patient areas, high levels of natural light and external views are on offer, as well as environmentally friendly finishes such as low volatile organise compound (VOC) paints, carpets etc. The acoustic design also minimises noise.
