Port Pirie Emergency Department Redevelopment

The Emergency Department redevelopment at Port Pirie Regional Heath Services is a key investment in healthcare infrastructure for South Australia’s mid north region. Funded by the South Australian Government, the $15.6 million redevelopment strengthens the facility's role as a critical emergency healthcare hub.

Designed as a modern, fit-for-purpose facility, the new Emergency Department improves rapid access to emergency care for the local community and surrounding region. The department includes two resuscitation bays, eight patient treatment bays, a low-stimulation room, and a dedicated emergency entrance with patient admission and consultation areas, providing an efficient and patient-centred model of care.

The design draws on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, incorporating planning principles that enhance infection prevention, community safety and health system resilience. Flexible clinical spaces support contemporary healthcare delivery while enabling the department to respond to future challenges and changing models of care.

Patient wellbeing has been a key consideration throughout the design. A naturally lit waiting area creates a welcoming and calming arrival experience, while integrated Indigenous artwork celebrates local culture and strengthens connections to Country. Together, these elements contribute to an environment that supports patients, families and staff while reflecting the identity of the Port Pirie community.
